How this time zone converter works

Every conversion here uses the IANA time zone database, the shared record of time zone rules that governments report their changes to and that browsers and phones ship with. Your browser applies those rules to the exact date you pick, so a time in March or November, when many countries change their clocks, is converted with the offset that will really be in force that day.

Most time zone mistakes come from three things. Daylight saving time: countries change on different dates, and many never change at all. Half-hour offsets: India is UTC+5:30 and Nepal UTC+5:45, so a whole hour in one place is a half hour in another. The date line: when it is Monday morning in Tokyo it is still Sunday evening in New York. The converter shows the date on both sides so the last one never catches you out.

Getting meeting times right

  • Write the zone as a city, or as “ET” and “PT”, rather than “EST” and “PST” all year. New York is on EDT, not EST, from March to November.
  • Save recurring meetings in a named time zone in your calendar. When one country changes its clocks, the calendar moves the meeting for everyone else.
  • Check the weeks around clock changes. In 2026 the UK changes on 25 October and the US on 1 November, so for that week New York is 4 hours behind London instead of 5.
  • For three or more cities, use Plan a meeting. The green band shows when everyone is inside 9–5; if there is none, rotate who takes the early or late slot.
Rules do change. In 2026 British Columbia, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Manitoba stopped changing their clocks, and Morocco moved to UTC+0 all year. Keeping your browser and phone updated keeps their time zone data current.

Time zone abbreviations

Abbreviations are handy but ambiguous: CST means US Central Time and also China Standard Time, and IST is used for India, Ireland and Israel. If in doubt, use a city name.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a time between two time zones?

Pick the two places in From and To (you can type a city, a country or an abbreviation such as IST or PST), then either keep it on Now or set a time and date. Both local times, both dates and the gap between them update as you type. The arrow button swaps the direction.

Does the converter handle daylight saving time?

Yes. It uses the time zone rules built into your browser for the exact date you choose, so it knows, for example, that New York is 9 hours 30 minutes behind India in summer and 10 hours 30 minutes behind in winter. Governments do change their rules, so keep your browser updated.

How do I find a meeting time for people in three or more cities?

Switch to Plan a meeting and add everyone’s city. Each row shows that city’s day, the green band marks the hours when everyone is between 9 AM and 5 PM, and you can drag the white window to try any slot and read each person’s local time.

What is the difference between EST and EDT?

EST (Eastern Standard Time) is UTC−5 and is used from early November to mid-March. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) is UTC−4 and is used from mid-March to early November. “ET” means whichever of the two is in force.

Why does the other city show a different date?

Places far apart can be on different calendar days. When it is 9 AM on Monday in Tokyo, it is 8 PM on Sunday in New York during US daylight time. The converter shows the date on both sides and says when it is already the next day or still the previous day.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It is free and there is no sign-up. The converter, planner and clocks run in your browser; the cities you add to the planner and world clock are saved only on your device.
