Meetings set in UTC by global teams

Remote-first companies often fix meetings in UTC so nobody’s summer time moves them.

  • A 09:00 UTC stand-up = 2:30 PM IST, after lunch
  • A 14:00 UTC all-hands = 7:30 PM IST
  • A 16:00 UTC review = 9:30 PM IST, late in the evening

Because UTC never shifts, these slots stay put in India all year, while colleagues in London or New York see theirs move twice.

Outage notices and status pages

Cloud providers and apps usually report incidents in UTC.

  • “Degraded service from 03:12 UTC” began at 8:42 AM IST
  • “Maintenance 22:00–23:00 UTC” = 3:30 AM–4:30 AM IST, the next morning by the Indian calendar

That second one catches people: a maintenance window “on the 12th” in UTC can fall on the 13th in India.

Doing it in your head

Adding five and a half hours is easiest in two steps: add 6 hours, then take away 30 minutes. So 14:00 UTC becomes 20:00, then 19:30, which is 7:30 PM in India. If adding takes you past midnight, move the date forward by one day as well: 21:00 UTC is 2:30 AM (next day) in India.

Minutes carry over the same way. 10:45 UTC plus 5:30 is 16:15, or 4:15 PM IST.

India’s neighbours on odd offsets

India is one of a handful of places whose clock is set to a half hour away from UTC. Sri Lanka shares India’s UTC+5:30 exactly, so every conversion on this page works for Colombo too. Next door, Nepal goes further, to UTC+5:45, fifteen minutes ahead of India. Myanmar is UTC+6:30, an hour ahead of India, and Afghanistan is UTC+4:30. Further afield, Iran (UTC+3:30), Newfoundland (UTC−3:30) and central Australia (UTC+9:30) also use half-hour offsets.
