Where Mountain Time actually applies

Mountain Time is the US zone with the most exceptions. The core is simple: Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and New Mexico use it and change clocks with the rest of the country. Around the edges it gets messy.

  • Arizona stays on MST all year, except the Navajo Nation, which does use daylight saving. The Hopi Reservation, surrounded by Navajo land, does not, so in summer you can change time zones twice on one drive.
  • Idaho is split: the south, including Boise, is Mountain; the northern panhandle is Pacific.
  • Parts of Oregon (most of Malheur County), Texas (El Paso), and the western edges of Nebraska, Kansas and the Dakotas are on Mountain Time too.

When a contact gives you a state rather than a city, ask which town. The converter above takes cities like Boise, Phoenix and Denver, so it handles the difference for you.

MST, MDT and “MT”

MST (Mountain Standard Time) is UTC−7; MDT (Mountain Daylight Time) is UTC−6 and applies from March to November everywhere in the zone except most of Arizona. People often write “MST” all year to mean Mountain Time in general. Outside Arizona, a summer invite saying “10 AM MST” nearly always means 10 AM in Denver, which is 12:00 PM ET. From Arizona, “MST” in July is literally correct, and 10 AM there is 1:00 PM ET. Writing “MT” plus a city avoids the guesswork.
