Japan and the United States across the date line
Tokyo and New York are so far apart on the clock that their working days never touch. The workable hours are the American evening and the Japanese morning, which fall on different calendar dates.
US–Japan business calls
Pick the US evening, Japan morning slot, or the US morning, Japan night slot.
- New York 7–9 PM (winter) = Tokyo 9:00 AM–11:00 AM next day
- New York 8–10 PM (summer) = Tokyo 9:00 AM–11:00 AM next day
- New York 8 AM = Tokyo 10:00 PM (winter) or 9:00 PM (summer)
Japan’s Friday evening is still Friday morning in the US, so a reply sent at 6 PM Friday in Tokyo arrives at 5:00 AM Friday in New York (summer).
Tokyo and Wall Street
The two markets hand over to each other overnight.
- Tokyo opens at 9 AM JST = 7:00 PM ET the evening before (winter), 8:00 PM ET (summer)
- Tokyo closes at 3:30 PM JST = 1:30 AM ET (winter)
- Wall Street’s 4 PM close = 6:00 AM JST the next morning (winter)
Anime, baseball and events from Japan
Japanese evening schedules turn into American mornings.
- A late-night 11 PM anime slot in Japan = 10:00 AM ET (summer), 9:00 AM ET (winter)
- A 7 PM baseball game in Tokyo = 6:00 AM ET, the same morning in the US
- A 10 AM product event in Tokyo = 8:00 PM ET the night before (winter)
The rest of the US from Japan
Move west across America and the gap grows by an hour per zone.
- Chicago: 15 hours behind in winter, 14 in summer
- Denver: 16 hours behind in winter, 15 in summer
- Los Angeles: 17 hours behind in winter, 16 in summer; 9 AM Tokyo = 5:00 PM PT the day before in summer
Why Japan is a day ahead
Tokyo is UTC+9 and New York is UTC−5 or −4, so the International Date Line runs between them. For every hour from midnight until 1 or 2 PM in Tokyo, it is still the previous date in New York. A Monday 9 AM start in Japan happens on Sunday evening in America.
Japan does not use daylight saving time, so all of the seasonal change comes from the US side, on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. The next switch is Sunday 1 November 2026, when the gap to New York widens from 13 to 14 hours.
Other conversions from Japan time
JST is UTC+9 all year, so to reach UTC subtract 9 hours: 9 AM in Tokyo is 12:00 AM UTC. London is 9 hours behind Tokyo in the British winter and 8 in the British summer, and India is always 3½ hours behind (see JST to IST). For any other city, type it into the converter above.
Tokyo time on both US coasts
The first two columns are New York, the last two Los Angeles. Use the winter columns from early November to mid-March. Shaded rows are Tokyo mornings that fall on a US evening.
