Running an East Coast day with the West in it

From New York, California is the colleague who is always three hours late to the day and three hours late to leave. Most friction comes from forgetting which of those two you are dealing with.

Managing people in California

Your mornings are for the East; your afternoons are for both coasts.

  • Nothing for the West Coast before noon ET: that is their 9 AM
  • A 4 PM meeting on your calendar is 1:00 PM for them, a comfortable slot
  • Ask for something at 3 PM ET and it can still be done that day: they have until 8:00 PM ET

Put both zones in the invite title (“1 PM ET / 10 AM PT”). It prevents the classic no-show where someone read the time in the wrong zone.

Calling California businesses

A West Coast office opening at 9 AM does not answer until your lunchtime.

A lot of tech and entertainment runs on Pacific Time, which works in your favour.

  • Anything released at midnight PT is out at 3:00 AM ET, ready when you wake up
  • A 10 AM PT product keynote is 1:00 PM ET, over your lunch
  • A “noon PT” sale starts at 3:00 PM ET

Flying coast to coast

Going west you fly into the wind, so New York to Los Angeles takes about six hours, but the clock only moves three. Leave JFK at 8 AM and you land around 11 AM local time, with most of a day still ahead of you.

Coming east is quicker in the air, about five hours, but you lose three on the clock. That is what makes the red-eye work: leave LAX at 10 PM Pacific, sleep if you can, and land in New York at around 6:30 AM. Most people find the westbound shift easier on the body, because staying up three hours late is easier than waking three hours early.

Arizona, Hawaii and the other exceptions

Most of the US changes clocks on the same nights, so New York and California stay 3 hours apart. The places that do not change are the ones that confuse people.

Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) stays on Mountain Standard Time all year. When it is noon in New York, Phoenix is at 10:00 AM in winter but 9:00 AM in summer, the same as Los Angeles. Hawaii also skips daylight saving: noon in New York is 7:00 AM in Honolulu in winter and 6:00 AM in summer.

If your team includes Phoenix or Honolulu, a recurring meeting that never moves for New York and Los Angeles will move by an hour for them twice a year.
