When it’s 12:00 PM in New York (Eastern), it’s 11:00 AM in Chicago (Central), 10:00 AM in Denver (Mountain), 9:00 AM in Los Angeles (Pacific) and 8:00 AM in Anchorage (Alaska). Honolulu is at 6:00 AM in summer and 7:00 AM in winter. Phoenix matches Los Angeles in summer and Denver in winter, because Arizona does not move its clocks.
Understanding US time zones
There are four main time zones in the contiguous 48 states:
- Eastern Time (ET): New York, Washington DC, Florida, Georgia. UTC−5 (EST) / UTC−4 (EDT)
- Central Time (CT): Chicago, most of Texas, Louisiana, Illinois. UTC−6 (CST) / UTC−5 (CDT)
- Mountain Time (MT): Denver, Colorado, Utah, Arizona*. UTC−7 (MST) / UTC−6 (MDT)
- Pacific Time (PT): Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, California. UTC−8 (PST) / UTC−7 (PDT)
*Most of Arizona does not observe daylight saving time and stays on MST all year.
Alaska Time (AKST, UTC−9 / AKDT, UTC−8) covers almost all of Alaska; the Aleutian Islands west of 169°30′W use Hawaii–Aleutian Time with daylight saving. Hawaii uses HST, UTC−10, all year. Several states are split between two zones, among them Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Idaho and Oregon.
Is there one time in the US?
No, there is no single time across the US. The 50 states use six time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii–Aleutian) and most of Arizona stays on standard time all year. US territories add more: Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands use Atlantic Time (UTC−4), Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands use Chamorro Time (UTC+10), and American Samoa uses Samoa Time (UTC−11). This means:
- When it’s 3:00 PM in New York, it’s 12:00 PM (noon) in Los Angeles
- The difference from the East Coast to the West Coast is 3 hours all year
- Business hours vary: 9 AM Eastern = 6 AM Pacific
Why is California behind New York?
California (Pacific Time) is 3 hours behind New York (Eastern Time) because the Earth rotates from west to east. The sun rises in the east first, so New York has sunrise, noon and sunset about 3 hours before California does.
This is why when New Yorkers are having lunch at noon, people in Los Angeles are still in their morning routine at 9:00 AM.
Does the US observe daylight saving time?
Yes, most of the United States observes daylight saving time (DST). Clocks “spring forward” 1 hour at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday in March and “fall back” 1 hour at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday in November. The next changes are on Sunday 1 November 2026, Sunday 14 March 2027 and Sunday 7 November 2027.
Places that do not observe DST:
- Hawaii (stays on HST all year)
- Most of Arizona (stays on MST all year; the Navajo Nation does change)
- The US territories: Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa
US time compared to India (IST)
India (IST, UTC+5:30) is ahead of every US time zone. India never changes its clocks, so the gap is one hour smaller while the US is on daylight time.

Does the US observe daylight saving time?
