Working with London from the East Coast

For most New York offices, London is the easiest overseas city to work with: the whole of your morning overlaps with their afternoon. The catch is that the overlap ends at lunchtime, and twice a year it moves.

The shared hours run from the start of your day to about lunch.

  • 9 AM–12:30 PM in New York = 2:00 PM–5:30 PM in London
  • Book anything that needs London before 11 AM ET, so it ends before they head home
  • On a Friday, London has started its weekend by 5:30 PM their time, which is 12:30 PM yours

By the time you open your laptop at 8 AM on Monday, London has already done half a working day, so check overnight email before your first call.

The weeks when it is only 4 hours

The UK changes its clocks on the last Sunday of March and October. The US changes on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. In between, the gap is 4 hours.

Premier League on US TV

Most English football kicks off at set UK times, so the US times follow the gap.

  • 3:00 PM UK = 10:00 AM ET (11:00 AM in the late-October week)

The Saturday 3 PM games are not broadcast live in the UK, but they are shown in the US, so American fans often see more live matches than British ones.

GMT is not always London time

Greenwich Mean Time never changes: it is UTC+0 all year. The UK only uses it from late October to late March. For the rest of the year London is on British Summer Time (BST), GMT+1.

So there are two honest answers to “EST to GMT”. Against GMT itself, New York is 5 hours behind in winter (EST) and 4 hours behind in summer (EDT). Against London’s clocks, it is 5 hours behind almost all year, because both cities move by an hour in summer.

If someone quotes a time “in GMT” in July, ask whether they mean UK time. Most people mean London’s clock. Pilots, ships, weather services and many computer systems mean the real GMT, which is 4 hours ahead of New York in summer. Iceland, Ghana and Senegal use GMT all year, so for them the gap to New York really is 4 hours from March to November.

Flying New York to London

Eastbound flights are short and overnight. A plane leaving JFK at 7 PM, when it is already 12:00 AM in London, lands about seven hours later at around 7 AM London time. You lose a night’s sleep, so most people stay awake until the local evening.

Westbound flights are longer, about eight hours, because of the headwinds. Leave Heathrow at 11 AM and you land in New York around 2 PM the same afternoon, gaining back the five hours.
