Japan, Hong Kong and India do not use daylight saving time, so their UTC hours never change. The US and UK do, which is why their UTC hours move by one hour twice a year.

- Pre-market: 4:00 AM - 9:30 AM ET on Nasdaq and NYSE Arca (7:00 AM on NYSE American, NYSE National and NYSE Texas)
- After-hours: 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM ET on Nasdaq and on the NYSE markets that offer late trading
- Days: Monday - Friday
- Holidays: Closed on the NYSE/Nasdaq holiday list below. This is not the same as the federal holiday list: markets close on Good Friday but stay open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
- Coming soon: Nasdaq expects to add a 9:00 PM - 4:00 AM ET overnight session from Sunday 6 December 2026, giving nearly 23-hour weekday trading (pending SIP readiness and any SEC rule changes).

Between them, the major stock exchanges cover most of the 24-hour weekday cycle. Here's when each one opens in UTC. Where two times are shown, the first applies while that country is on daylight saving time:
London-New York overlap: London and New York stock markets are both open from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM New York time for most of the year (2:30 - 4:30 PM UTC in winter, 1:30 - 3:30 PM UTC in summer). For a few weeks in March and October/November, when the US is on daylight saving time but the UK is not, the overlap stretches to three hours (9:30 AM - 12:30 PM New York time).

Universal Closures
- January 1: New Year's Day (closed in the US, UK, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia; India's NSE was open)
- December 25: Christmas Day (closed in the US, UK, continental Europe, India and Australia; Tokyo stays open)
- December 31, 2026: Xetra and Tokyo closed; London and most Euronext markets close early (half day); ASX normal trading ends 2:10 PM; NYSE and Nasdaq run a full day
Regional Holidays
- Lunar New Year: Feb 17, 2026. Hong Kong was closed Feb 17-19 with a half day on Feb 16; mainland China markets closed for a longer Spring Festival break
- Golden Week: Apr 29 and May 4-6 (Japan)
- Diwali: NSE closed Tue Nov 10, 2026 (Balipratipada); a special Muhurat trading session is held on Sun Nov 8 (Laxmi Pujan)
- Boxing Day: Dec 26, 2026 is a Saturday, so the London Stock Exchange and ASX are closed on Mon Dec 28 instead

Timing Your Trades
- London-NY Overlap: 9:30 - 11:30 AM New York time for most of the year, the only time both cities' stock markets are open together
- Asian Session: Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Mumbai trade between roughly midnight and 10:00 AM UTC
- US Early Closes: 1:00 PM ET on Nov 27 and Dec 24, 2026
- Opening Auctions: Most major exchanges set the day's first price in an auction (NYSE's opening auction is at 9:30 AM ET), and prices can move quickly just after the open
- Closing Auctions: NYSE (4:00 PM ET), London, Euronext, Tokyo (since November 2024) and India (for F&O stocks, since August 2026) all end the day with a closing auction that sets the official closing price
