Spot crypto markets never close, but activity is uneven. Kaiko's research on bitcoin found the busiest trading hour in early 2024 was 15:00-16:00 UTC, around the New York stock market open. This guide shows when the London-New York part of the day falls in your time zone, and which crypto products do have fixed schedules.

Crypto Trading Sessions: 24-Hour Activity Map
Unlike stock markets, spot crypto exchanges are open around the clock. Activity still follows the traditional market day to a degree: Kaiko found that in the first quarter of 2024 the busiest weekday hour for bitcoin was 15:00 UTC, and the second busiest was 20:00-21:00 UTC, near the US stock market close. The "Activity" labels below are a general guide based on that research, not exchange-published figures.

Crypto exchanges do not publish their busiest hours, and we could not find reliable exchange-published or independent research giving peak times for individual platforms, so this page does not list them. What we can tell you is which crypto markets run 24/7 and which follow a fixed schedule.
Spot exchanges (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken)
Hours: 24/7, including weekends and holidays
- No opening or closing bell
- Individual markets can pause for scheduled maintenance, so check your exchange's status page
- Weekend volume is lower: Kaiko found 16% of bitcoin volume traded on weekends in the first half of 2024, down from 28% in 2019
CME crypto futures and options
Hours: 24/7 since 29 May 2026
- Continuous trading on CME Globex began Friday 29 May 2026 at 4:00 PM Chicago time
- At least a two-hour maintenance period each weekend
- Monthly bitcoin futures stop trading at 4:00 PM London time on the last Friday of the contract month
US spot bitcoin ETFs
Hours: US stock market hours only
- Regular session 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM ET, weekdays
- Extended sessions where the venue offers them (Nasdaq: 4:00 AM - 8:00 PM ET)
- Closed on weekends and US market holidays
- Nasdaq expects to add a 9:00 PM - 4:00 AM ET overnight session from 6 December 2026
Weekly Patterns: Which Days Have the Most Activity
Crypto volume is not spread evenly across the week: Kaiko's data shows weekends carry a much smaller share of bitcoin volume than weekdays. We found no reliable published data ranking the individual weekdays, so instead of guessing, the table lists the scheduled events that move all markets.

The 1:00-5:00 PM UTC window used on this page is 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM EST in US winter or 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM EDT in US summer. More volume does not guarantee better prices: Amberdata's 2025 study found order-book depth peaked earlier in the day, around 11:00 UTC.
What time does crypto market close?
Spot crypto markets never close. Unlike stock exchanges, which have fixed opening and closing times, cryptocurrency exchanges run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays such as Christmas Day. Individual exchanges occasionally pause a market for maintenance, and regulated products have their own schedules: CME crypto futures trade 24/7 apart from a weekly maintenance window, and US spot bitcoin ETFs trade only during US stock market hours.
When is the best time to trade crypto from India (IST)?
The 1:00-5:00 PM UTC London-New York window falls between 6:30 PM and 10:30 PM IST all year, because India does not use daylight saving time. That is a convenient evening window that does not require a late-night alarm. Kaiko's busiest bitcoin hour in early 2024, 3:00 PM UTC, is 8:30 PM IST. The Asian session (roughly 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM IST) covers Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore business hours.
Does daylight saving time affect crypto trading hours?
Spot crypto markets themselves don't change hours, since they never close. What moves is the activity tied to traditional markets. The New York stock market opens at 9:30 AM local time all year, which is 2:30 PM UTC in US winter and 1:30 PM UTC in US summer, so US-hours activity shifts by an hour in UTC when US clocks change. London's hours shift the same way when the UK moves to BST. The fixed 1:00-5:00 PM UTC window on this page covers the overlap in both seasons; in New York it is 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM in winter (EST) and 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in summer (EDT).
Why does crypto volume drop on Sundays?
We could not find published data showing that Sunday on its own is the quietest day, but weekends as a whole are much quieter than weekdays. Kaiko found only 16% of bitcoin trading volume happened on Saturdays and Sundays in the first half of 2024, down from 28% in 2019, and linked part of the drop to US spot bitcoin ETFs, which trade only on weekdays. Lower volume does not automatically mean thinner order books: Amberdata's study of July-August 2025 data found average order-book depth on Saturdays and Sundays was slightly higher than the weekday average.
